How We Work

New Works Project makes the creation of new classical music more accessible by building clear, structured ways for composers, performers, educators, and supporters to participate. Our programs are designed to remove unnecessary barriers while creating meaningful connections throughout the contemporary classical music ecosystem.

From accessible MiniWork commissions to larger community-funded projects, professional development, creative matchmaking, and score distribution, we support different forms of participation at different stages. Each pathway is built around transparency, collaboration, creator ownership, and a shared commitment to helping new music come to life.

FAQ

Who can participate in New Works Project?

New Works Project welcomes composers, performers, educators, supporters, and others interested in creating or supporting contemporary classical music through commissioning, professional development, community membership, or score distribution.

Do I need a membership to commission music?

No. MiniWork commissions are open to anyone, and membership is not required. The Supporter Network is designed for people who want deeper participation, co-commissioner recognition, voting opportunities, community access, recordings, and additional member benefits.

How does score distribution work?

New Works Project offers digital and physical score distribution through its Black Ribbon print-on-demand partnership. Composers retain full ownership and control, member composers earn 70% of each sale, and distribution is also available to non-members.

How much does it cost to commission a new work?

MiniWork commissions are available for a flat $250 and produce an original 60–90 second work. Core Series commissions are larger projects that average approximately $2,000 per work and are supported through community participation.
